Rubber Tyred Gantry Crane

A rubber-tyred gantry crane (RTG) is a medium-to-large lifting equipment widely used in ports and container yards, primarily for the loading, unloading, stacking, and transfer of containers.

Product Description

A rubber-tyred gantry crane (RTG) is a medium-to-large lifting equipment widely used in ports and container yards, primarily for the loading, unloading, stacking, and transfer of containers.

It moves on tires and can transport and stack containers quickly and accurately.

1. Basic Structure and Characteristics

Portal structure: Features an elevated portal design that spans the container yard and is mounted on tires.
Tire system: Equipped with multiple (typically 8–16) heavy-duty pneumatic tires, eliminating the need for fixed tracks and offering high flexibility.

Hoisting unit: Includes container lifting equipment (e.g., telescopic spreaders) capable of handling 20ft, 40ft, 45ft, and other standard containers.

Power system: Traditional models use diesel engines, while modern models are often electric (grid-powered or hybrid), making them energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

Turning system: The tires can turn at multiple angles (e.g., 90° right-angle turns or diagonal movement) to accommodate operations in narrow yards.

2. Main Technical Parameters

Rubber tyred gantry crane is suitable for container stacking and transportation operations in container terminals and yards. It is a kind of container handling equipment commonly used in the world. According to different yard characteristics and usage requirements, electrical control and transmission systems are also different.

Rubber tyred gantry cranes are generally used in the following aspects:

1. Container terminal operation: Used on the port terminal for container loading, unloading and stacking operations, to quickly complete the transfer operation between container ships and land vehicles.

2. Inland port operations: Transport containers, refit, maintain and process specialized equipment with reasonable allocation in inland ports.

3. Open yard operations: Procurement, storage, transportation, loading and unloading to improve the turnover of goods.

Main Technical Parameters

  • Lifting capacity: Typically 30–50 tons (including the weight of the lifting equipment).
  • Span: Common layouts include 6+1 (6 container rows +1 lane) or 7+1, with spans ranging from approximately 18–35 meters.
  • Stacking height: Can stack containers 4–6 layers high (depending on the model).
  • Movement speed: Empty travel speed is about 20–30 km/h, with lower speeds during loaded operations.

3. Working Modes

Stacking operations: Loading, unloading, sorting, and stacking containers in yards.

Terminal collaboration: Often works in conjunction with ship-to-shore cranes (STS cranes), where STS cranes handle ship loading/unloading while RTGs manage yard transfers.

Automation upgrades: Some newer RTGs feature automatic positioning, remote control, or unmanned operation (e.g., ABB and ZPMC intelligent RTGs).

4. Application Scenarios

Port container yards (e.g., Yantian Port, Rotterdam Port).
Railway freight stations (container transfer hubs).
Large logistics parks (container storage and distribution).
