The Timber Handling Grab is an effective tool that replaces manual labor for wood handling in harsh environments. It is available in single-rope, double-rope, and four-rope configurations. Featuring a simple structure, an innovative opening/closing mechanism, and user-friendly operation, this grab requires only opening to place on logs and automatically closes with crane wire rope elevation. Unloading is equally simple: just lower the grab onto logs or the ground, then release it as the wire rope ascends. Designed for single-drum crane operations, it has been widely adopted in Chinese ports and exported in bulk, earning widespread user approval. Utilizing 3D virtual design and ANSYS software for structural analysis of key components, the grab achieves optimized weight distribution and extended service life.

 

1. Basic Structure and Composition of the Timber Handling Grab

 

 

The mechanical wood grab is mainly composed of the following parts:

  • Grasp body: Usually made of high-strength steel, including two or more openable claws (dowels).
  • Claw teeth: Installed on the inside of the claw to firmly grip the wood and prevent slipping.
  • Steel wire rope system: Controls the opening, closing, and lifting of the grab via the winch mechanism of the crane or excavator.
  • Block set: Changes the direction of force of the steel wire rope and improves gripping force.
  • Rotating mechanism (optional): Some models are equipped with a rotating function for easy adjustment of wood stacking direction.

 

2. Classification of Timber Handling Grabs

 

 

(1) By driving mode:

Mechanical (wire rope control): The grab's opening and closing are controlled by the steel wire rope of the crane or excavator. It features a simple structure, convenient maintenance, and low cost. Suitable for small and medium wood loading and unloading operations.

Hydraulic type: Driven by a hydraulic cylinder, it provides greater closing force and more stable grasping, making it suitable for heavy wood or high-frequency operations. Often used in large port timber handling equipment.

(2) By capture mode:

Double-pinch gripper (most commonly used): Features two symmetrical claws, ideal for capturing logs and timber.

Multi-pole gripper (e.g., four-claw gripper): Suitable for loading and unloading wood chips, short wood, or bulk wood to prevent material spillage.

Rotating grab: Can rotate 360°, making it convenient to adjust wood stacking direction and improve operational efficiency.

 

3. Working Principle of the Timber Handling Grab

 

 

  • Open state: The wire rope is relaxed, and the grab opens under its own weight.
  • Grabbing wood: The grab lowers onto the wood pile, the wire rope tightens to close the claws, and the teeth bite into the wood.
  • Lift: After closing, the crane or excavator lifts the grab to the target location (e.g., truck, cargo ship, or storage area).
  • Unloading: The wire rope is relaxed, and the grab opens automatically to release the wood.
